We designed & built a 3D data visualisation based on historical weather data to be displayed in the City of Parramatta's new library development.

Supermarket collaborated with Craig Walker to create a 3D visual based on weather data from the City of Parramatta for the council to display in their new library development.

The project involved delving into historical data related to variations in the area's weather patterns, looking for meaningful insights to serve as the foundation for the 3D visual.

After identifying rainfall, temperature, visibility and air quality as interesting and complete streams of data, concepts for the design of the project were explored through rounds of sketches using these four categories as inspiration.

Harnessing the power of React Three Fiber, the raw data was transformed into a dynamic visual experience. Pulling in and evolving the generated concepts, we mapped out how we would represent different variables within each stream of data using shape, colour, size and motion. We then planned out the scene and user interface for the 3D visual to get a feel for how the build would be structured.

This allowed us to deliver an engaging 3D visual experience highlighting variations in Parramatta’s weather data. The four unique models featured, embodying variations in rainfall, temperature, visibility and air quality, each display a model for every quarter from 2018 to 2023.

The 3D visuals serve as a unique medium for data interpretation, enabling us to display complex weather patterns in a creative way and opens up huge potential for data to be represented in ways that are both more engaging and thought-provoking.

The movement, scale, and colour of each model are designed to reflect specific weather parameters.
